First full week with the new data slate. It's still early to see very clearly what the top 5 best factions are. But what is already very clear to me is the fact that there are no OP factions. A few weeks ago this article had the same title. Then two Guard players came second and third at a major tournament after many people thought the faction was total trash. I thought that was proof that every faction has a chance to win. Few people agreed with me on this. This weekend they won the biggest tournament while I think Guard is still not very good. However, the two OP factions Aeldari and Chaos Space Marines have been nerfed so that the game as a whole is much more balanced. I dare say that since I've been playing competitively (since 8th edition) the Meta has never been so balanced. It's really time to stop Meta chaging or even copying lists. Play the army you like, because you think it looks nice or because you think the play style is cool. Come up with your own strategy and play many games with the same list. I think you get the best results in 10th edition by playing well and not by playing the best lists. Enough about meta time for my top 5 after this weekend's results.
1. Necrons
No first placings this week but still a lot of x-1. Necrons remain my number one factions but are less dominant than I thought. I think people learning how to play against Necron. I see other factions with just a lot of shooting. Which works well against the C'Tan because as the Orcs say "Have you tried more Dakka?". This could be a reason why Necron didn't dominate this weekend.
2. Space Marines
Second place this week! I think Marines are better than Aeldari right now. This doesn't has to do with stronger units or strong army rules, but especially the fact that you have so many unit options. Marines are the army that can most easily adapt to the Meta. This is due to the depth of the codex. Marines will always have a false winrate. This is because most new players play Marines. The army has so many models that there are few players who own everything or can even borrow it. This weekend Ironstorm Spearhead was the clear winner. This was already good but the new Dark Angels variant is very sweet. Azrael like Calgar is so good because he gives CP every turn. Ravenwing Darkshroud aura that gives stealth is very strong to give to other vehicles. Finally, you now see a Stormraven Gunship in almost every Ironstorm. This is mainly to quickly put pressure somewhere on the field due to his Stransport ability and the fact that he is tanky and uses a lot of shooting for his points. People put in Sternguard Veterans to blow up infantry. Or a Brutalis Dreadnought to quickly apply pressure.
3. Aeldari
The faction is played a lot less. Many good players have changed their minds and are going to play another faction. Still, we see some good placements this week, but I think Aeldari might drop even further.
4. Adept Custodes
There they are, the Golden Boys did not disappoint me this weekend. Lots of high placings this weekend and I expect Cudtodes to be a top dog again in this Meta. Certainly not OP or too good, but while it is difficult to always play the ideal list with Marines, the opposite is true for Custodes. Because they have so few models, you can quickly play the optimal list. So make sure you can win against Custodes. Have you tried more Dakka?
5. Tyranids
It never ceases to amaze me that so few people play Tyranids. We had a 5-0 this weekend. Very cool list played by John Lenon and if such a player picked this faction then you know it can win. But as described earlier, any list can win and fifth place will be the most difficult to choose every week.
To conclude, GW will do everything it can to ensure that each faction has a win rate of around 50%. Pros will do everything they can to find the faction and/or list that does too much for the points. Usually with a new codex release. My advice is don't copy this behavior, it doesn't make you a better player, it's expensive and this is only interesting for the top players. Stick to your faction and adapt your list to the Meta and you will become a better player and have a higher win rate.
