Tutorial Nighthaunt Chainrasp with Blue Glow

Nighthaunt Chainrasp with Blue Glow

Hi everyone,

A follower on Instagram asked how to paint Nighthaunts, and since I still needed to paint the Underworlds warband called Thorns of the Briar Queen, I decided to make a tutorial on one of the Chainrasp ghosts. Nighthaunts are spectral undead from the Warhammer universe, known for their ethereal and haunting appearance. This tutorial will guide you through painting these ghostly figures with a step-by-step approach.

Step 1

Chaos Black Spray
Abaddon Black
Mechanicus Standard Grey
Undercoat the model with black; I used a spray. Then paint the upper cloak with Abaddon Black and the bottom one with Mechanicus Standard Grey.

Step 2

Sotek Green
Layer the bottom cloak with Sotek Green, applying two thin layers.

Step 3

Citadel Contrast Akhelian Green
Shade the green with Contrast Akhelian Green.

Step 4

Sotek Green
Paint a gradient with wet Sotek Green on 50% of the top of the bottom cloak. Then highlight all the edges of the cloak with Sotek Green.

Step 5

Sotek Green
Guass Blaster Green
Make a 50/50 mix of Sotek Green and Gauss Blaster Green. Now do the same thing as step 4 but only on 30% of the top of the cloak. Then highlight all the edges of the cloak with the same mix.

Step 6

Sotek Green
Guass Blaster Green
Make a 25/75 mix of Sotek Green and Gauss Blaster Green. Now do the same thing as step 5 but only on 20% of the top of the cloak. Then highlight all the edges of the cloak with the same mix.

Step 7

Guass Blaster Green
Highlight the cloak with Gauss Blaster Green.

Step 8

Guass Blaster Green
White Scar
Highlight only the sharpest corners and upper edges of the cloak with a 50/50 mix of Gauss Blaster Green and White Scar.

Step 9

Lahmian Medium
The Contrast paint made the dark parts a bit shiny, so we tone that down with Lahmian Medium.

Step 10

Leadbelcher
Paint all the steel parts with Leadbelcher.

Step 11

Agrax Earthshade
Shade the steel parts with Agrax Earthshade.

Step 12

Dark Reaper
Paint a rough highlight on the upper cloak with Dark Reaper.

Step 13

Thunderhawk Blue
Paint a slightly finer highlight on the Dark Reaper with Thunderhawk Blue.

Step 14

Russ grey
Paint a highlight with Russ Grey, but only cover 75% of the previous highlight.

Step 15

Fenrisian Grey
Paint a highlight with Fenrisian Grey, but only cover 75% of the previous highlight.

Step 16

Blue Horror
Paint a fine highlight on the end of all the highlights with Blue Horror.

Step 17

Citadel Contrast Terradon Turquoise
The black looks pretty good already, but I wanted to give it that blue night twilight effect. So we cover the whole upper cloak with Contrast Terradon Turquoise.

Step 18

Mechanicus Standard Grey
Basecoat the skull and the arms with Mechanicus Standard Grey.

Step 19

Corax White
Layer the arms with Corax White.

Step 20

Contrast Apothecary White
Contrast Black Templar
Shade the arms with Contrast Apothecary White. Then shade the skull with Contrast Black Templar. I also shaded some of the iron parts for some contrast.

Step 21

Corax White
White Scar
Highlight the arms with Corax White and White Scar.

Step 22

Eshin Grey
Roughly highlight the skull with Eshin Grey.

Step 23

Dawnstone
Highlight the skull with Dawnstone.

Step 24

Administratum Grey
White Scar
Fine highlight the skull with Administratum Grey and add a dot highlight with White Scar on the teeth.

Step 25

Rhinox Hide
Administratum Grey
Mournfang Brown
Averland Sunset
Basecoat the base with Rhinox Hide, the skull, and the rocks with Administratum Standard Grey. Paint the rose branch with Mournfang Brown and the spines with Averland Sunset.

Step 26

Agrax Earthshade
Shade the whole base with Agrax Earthshade.

Step 27

Baneblade Brown
Karak Stone
Flayed One Flesh
Drybrush the base with Baneblade Brown, then with Karak Stone, and a very drybrush with Flayed One Flesh.

Step 28

Glue the tuft on the base.

Step 29

Kantor Blue
Basecoat the rose with Kantor Blue.

Step 30

Thunderhawk Blue
Temple Guard Blue
Blue Horror
Highlight the rose with Thunderhawk Blue and then with Temple Guard Blue. Then paint a fine highlight with Blue Horror.

Step 31

White Scar
Make a mix of PVA glue, modeling snow, and White Scar. It should be a 33/33/34 mix. Make piles that you then smear.

Step 32

Abaddon Black
Valhallan Blizzard
Paint the edge of the base with Abaddon Black and put some Valhallan Blizzard on the piles to create the effect of some wetter snow on top of the other snow.

Step 33

Front view of the finished work.
